Q&A with Energy & Carbon Lead, Steve
Lucky for us, Steve Reddington believes you get what you give in life. He’s a passionate environmental scientist and we are grateful to have him leading our Energy & Carbon Program. Find out more about Steve below.
LET’S START WITH THE PERSONAL - TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF
I live in Geelong with my wife and two boys, Judson (7) and Marley (5).
Outside work, I enjoy getting outdoors and tinkering with old Volkswagens. I’m an active volunteer as a Cub Scout leader year-round plus an Auskick coach in the footy season.
My biggest personal achievement has been remaining resilient following the extreme premature birth (24 weeks) of our younger son, Marley, who has multiple ongoing health conditions.
WHAT’S YOUR PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND?
I’m a Deakin University alumni, having studied Environmental Science (Environmental Management).
Prior to joining Barwon Water, I worked in environmental roles in the local government and not-for-profit sectors. This included a stint working in planning and environmental enforcement, which was quite an experience but I have found the knowledge and skills I gained to be invaluable in everything I have done since.
WHAT’S YOUR CURRENT WATER CORPORATION ROLE?
I’m the Senior Environmental Planner at Barwon Water, working in the Strategy, Systems and Environment group. I joined the organisation in February 2008.
A key part of my role is the ongoing development and implementation of Barwon Water’s Zero Emissions program, which has been a dominant focus since we adopted our 100% renewable electricity target in 2016. This includes energy and carbon accounting and reporting, energy efficiency, renewable energy projects, carbon sequestration and offsetting.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE WHAT YOU DO EACH DAY (BUT TO YOUR GRANDMA)?
I’m helping Barwon Water switch to 100% renewable electricity and eliminate its greenhouse gas emissions.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR ROLE WITH IWN
I have been involved with IWN since 2015 and became the Energy & Carbon Program Manager in 2019.
I became involved because the level of sharing and collaboration in the Victorian water industry is fantastic and we need to continue to nurture and drive it.
The IWN programs bring together so many talented people who are true subject matter experts, having the in-depth knowledge and influence to drive continual improvement and innovation in our businesses.
I volunteer as program manager not just as a leadership opportunity, but as a beneficiary of the process I always remember that ‘you get what you give’.
