2019 NODP reflections: CHW project manager Russell Delahunty

As a participant in the 2019 Network Operator Development Program we were exposed to a wide variety of topics in the Network Operators Field. An introduction to the IWN and reoccurring updates part of the program.

At the highest level participants were introduced to the IWN scope and the work of the IWN champion within each organisation. The IWN component of the course was a highlight of the NODP as when working within operational areas it is not common to be exposed to the innovative research done by the IWN and water industry.

The projects presented by Dean Barnet (Western Water) showcases just some of the work done to push the envelope in improving the accuracy of condition assessments of existing water and sewer main. The benefit of the presentations from Dean was that the information presented was well rounded and non-biased.

The presentations included an overview or and validation of accuracy of a number of water main condition assessment tools including p-Cat, JD7 pipescan and Watercam. Digital metering and some of the challenges around data managed were also discussed.

Additionally Dean covered off on using satellite and aerial technology to identify locations of leaks and areas of healthy vegetation. Although using satellite technology was found to be in-accurate at this point for identifying water leaks it is still beneficial to understanding the existence of the technology is valuable.

Through gaining an understanding of the IWN and some of the research and development being done benefits both participants and their authority. For example it would be interesting to see the future applications of vegetation mapping particularly in the area of identifying sewer choke points. Additionally participants were shown where to find information on IWN programs moving forward.
